Economy

  • The North East economy is forecast to grow at 1.9% per annum between 2008 and 2012. Growth in this region is forecast to be slower than expected in comparison to both the national average and to other UK regions.
  • In 2006 the North East economy was worth £36bn, equivalent to 3.3% of the UK total.
  • Public services accounted for 27% of the regional economy in 2006, more than found nationally. Manufacturing also accounted for a relatively large proportion of economic activity.

Output

  • Worth £2.9bn in 2006, in 2000 prices. Construction in the North East accounts for around 4% of the UK total.
  • Output is forecast to grow at an annual average rate of 1.1% between 2008 and 2012.
  • Building Schools for the Future will provide a significant boost to the construction industry over the forecast period.
  • Construction output growth in the North East is forecast to be below a national average of 1.7%.

Employment

  • Total construction employment of 101,890 in 2006 in the North East is forecast to rise to 103,120 in 2008 and 112,600 in 2012.
  • To meet this demand, after taking into account those entering and leaving the industry, 3,070 new workers will be required to join the industry each year.
  • Construction professionals and technical staff, electrical trades and installation and wood trades and interior fit-out are expected to have the largest annual requirements.
